Pakisama

Pakisama

Pakisama is a Philippine organization dedicated to empowering Filipinos that are active in the rural sector, in order to be able to produce and own their businesses while utilizing means that are economically and environmentally sound. They also promote equality of gender and react to the economical problems that have existed in the past and still exist today.

Pakisama attempts to give a voice to the individual peasants through consolidation.  Utilizing the “strength in numbers” strategy, their actions are geared towards all peasants of all ages.

Their mission is to organize the people into one movement, empowering them to act as one voice that will affect society, politically in order to get programs implemented geared towards combating poverty and injustice on a national level.

Their goals are to make sure local, national and international legislation will support the further development and education of their population especially in the field of agriculture, and also to ensure an economically feasible policy that is construed to sustain these actions.

Through seminars and workshops the organization attempts to raise awareness for the national problems that exist as well as to recruit more members to further expand their reach, in order to influence governmental policies regarding the known issues about poverty amongst the population and injustices that still exist and the implementation of programs that will aid in remedying this situation.

Pakisama closely works with local farmer organizations and similar minded movements like Kaisahan and other organizations. In 2006 the movement split up, leading to the founding of Lakambini, a similar movement that successfully managed to launch campaigns of their own. Slowly, over the years the two organizations came together and are currently attending each other’s seminars and meetings and supporting each other logistically.
